She watched the crowd faintly but never tried to defend herself, because she knew no one will believe her. She glanced at her fellow grim Reapers but they all moved their eyes away and never looked at her.

So I go with the knee-jerk reaction that he’s insulting me. “What, no? I’m not saying that. Don, you’re a great guy. You’re one of the few people I call a friend. I just worry about both of you. And then seeing these books… I have to worry you are trying to change yourself because you think she’d want you to.” He sighed, trying to explain himself. I sighed too because he’s my friend, and I don’t like thinking his intentions are hostile. And it’s nice to know even though Reese is family, he has my back on this too. First thing in the morning, I bathe, dress and walk throughout the castle, repeating the spell while looking for an item to seal Thypon. Reaper is perched on my shoulder. We enter the kitchen only to find pots, pans, plates and candle sticks—nothing in here of use. The library had the odd vase of flowers, a plethora of books, and nothing else. I take a random book from the shelf, ‘The Alpha’s Mate Who Cried Wolf,’ I read, then laugh. ‘Sounds interesting. I suppose I can’t trap Thypon in a book, though?’ I say to Reaper.

My breath came in heavy, ragged gasps, but I forced myself to stay steady, to hold on as the chaos erupted around us. I thought I’d escaped the pull of my past, but here was Reaper, bleeding out in my emergency room, pulling me back into a nightmare I thought long buried. --- I scrubbed my hands under the harsh fluorescent lights, the sight of Reaper’s blood still fresh and vivid beneath my nails. I scrubbed and scrubbed until my skin reddened, raw from the hot water that felt like fire against my fingertips. Desperation clawed at my throat as I splashed on hand sanitizer—the burn only deepening the sense of horror coursing through me.

She hakes her head furiously as the tears roll down her face. “You are safe, I know they are scary. But they won’t touch you,” I say and I don’t know if I am trying to convince her or myself. I hate the fact she is scared of people and that someone hurt her so badly that she doesn’t trust anyone. This is my worst nightmare. I can endure everything The Reaper sets my way but I won’t tolerate that. I don’t think I would be able to survive.
