REJECTED MATE
I blurted out and immediately cringed.
“Now do you see why I told you I was from New Mesopotamia?” Griff said.
“It’s not so bad,” I lied.
“It really is,” he muttered.
He was right. I didn’t want to disparage his home, but without the protection of magic, this city of slums would have burned down decades, if not centuries ago, much like London did in the great fire of 1666.
We drove the rest of the way in silence.
On the outskirts of the city stood a six-story building shaped like a medieval castle but looking like it was made of breeze blocks. At the top of its arched entrance way hung a golden shield with a heraldic wolf, and beneath it were the words, YE OLD WOLF’S DEN.
