But lately, something’s been changing. There are flames now, curling at the corners of the dream. Not threatening, just familiar, I guess. They carry a scent. Wild jasmine. Spiced ash. Rain on hot stone. They carry her. Sometimes I see her face in the fire. Not clearly, just the ghost of a girl with dragon eyes. She never speaks but I can feel her in my bones, like thunder waking a sleeping house. Elira starts to notice. “Don’t go near the fire,” she says, voice tighter than usual.

My eyes started becoming heavy and before I knew it, I drifted off to my dream world. But peace didn’t come. Not even when I was already sleeping. The dream started with fire. Everywhere was on fire and it was spreading around fast like wildfire, burning everything that blocked its way into ashes. I felt the heat on my skin too but it did not burn me, just that the smoke choked my lungs. I stumbled through the fire, with my heart racing loud and fast inside of my chest. I saw wolves move in the shadows but I did not see their faces, just the way their eyes glowed with fire and their sharp fangs that they were exposing.

My body aches for him, even if my heart is telling me to back the hell off. The dream comes suddenly, out of nowhere, a fiery image that feels all too real. A building is on fire, and I’m standing there, stuck. The smoke stings my eyes, thick and suffocating. I look around, but I can’t see anything, can’t see the way out. I can hear someone—someone yelling my name. “Nina!”

Hearing her mention fire, Carl froze. His mind drifted to the dreams he’d had countless times—the little girl who hated him, and the ending that always played out the same. In every dream, the girl ran into the flames, holding the hand of a woman whose face was always blurred. The two of them would smile at each other before disappearing into the fire. Taking advantage of his hesitation, Renee broke free from Carl’s grip, putting a few steps of distance between them.

They were all a twisted vision I couldn't decipher but I know they were quite important and something I couldn't place my hand on.
