I no longer choose to dream because I start believing that it is absurd. Because what precisely is a dream? Is it like crumbled leaves and stems from a tree falling from the highest altitude and touched down on the rock bottom like shards of glass? I cannot put everything back together, having known that the coming years are a clouded reflection that I cannot seem to decrypt from afar as the fumes engulf me. But what must I do? At this point, all my dreams, all my hopes, all my plans, feel like they’re all crumbling down. I’m utterly, literally, figuratively, fucked.

My dream went on randomly and I searched for water everywhere I went. My wife woke me when she arrived at home and asked how I slept. I told her I was dreaming about being on a boat with rough seas. I got up and kissed her and she told me to go brush my teeth as I had bad breath. I smelled my breath and agreed. I came back from brushing and saw that the dog didn't steal my pillow while I was gone. I thought he had finally given up. I congratulated myself for winning that one.

I throw my phone on the bed as stared at my reflection on the small mirror. I rapidly picked the text book on the chair and threw it on the mirror. I stared at the pictures that had scattered on the floor. Some were still on the mirror as I started tearing them violently and tossing them inside my mouth then chewed then. More tears ran down my cheeks.

Another nightmare. I drag a hand over my face, trying to slow my breathing. But the images still claw at the edges of my mind. Blood. So much blood. A little girl screaming. And me… or something that feels like me… teeth bared, hands soaked red, the world shaking underfoot. I squeeze my eyes shut, trying to force the pieces to come together. But it’s always the same. Just when it feels like I might see the full picture, it all blurs into nothing.

Only fuel locked in the engine that kept me formed. The room shuddered. A tile trembled and broke. The crack ran in a clean line from the door to the far wall. Memory dust drifted up like powder. It smelled like old chalk and old sweat. The storage room did not feel like a room anymore. It felt like a picture peeling off a wet wall. “Not now,” I said. The words stuck in my throat like glass. “Not now, please.” The crumbling spread faster. Chunks of ceiling fell through the air and disappeared before they hit the ground. The walls started folding in on themselves. The void beneath the floor crept closer, eating away at the concrete in slow, inexorable waves.
