I could be free. The word had lost its shape somewhere in the last four days. I'd spent the entire book of my life chasing it, freedom, a clean life, out from under my father's shadow and my mother's abandonment and every powerful man's assumption that I was a thing to be moved around a board. And now I had it in my hand, forty-one dollars of it, one gate away, and it tasted exactly like the coffee I'd been nursing for an hour: burnt, and cheap, and nothing at all like the thing the word had promised when I was seventeen and swearing I'd never need anyone.

“I won't warn you twice. Follow me and you live.” Freedom sat in the air like a rumor and stabbed at me. Of course I wanted to leave. Every time I closed my eyes I saw the same images—the basement, the way his men watched me like I was property, the taste of humiliation, the sharp sting of being used—and my stomach clenched. Freedom was the only thing I had ever pictured in bright, warm colors since the day I realized the world had more than one option.

I woke up panting, with sweat all over my body. I had dreamed of that wolf again, my wolf. I hated dreaming about my freedom only to wake up yet again in captivity. Angrily, I picked the pillow underneath my head and tossed it on the wall. That stupid wolf had tried to convince me yet again to give up my freedom for no reason. I wished I could stop dreaming about her. No matter how much they tried to convince me otherwise, I wouldn’t believe she was real. Even if she was, she probably didn’t belong to me and was just a projection to make sure I stuck to their path.

“You wanna know what we call it?” I didn’t respond. More like I couldn’t. What they injected to me didn’t just calm me down. It wouldn’t even make me move. I could barely open my mouth nor speak. It shut Jia down. ”We call it The Freedom. You know why?” He walked in front of me. I watched as his eyes sparkled. Thinking of the things that are in their plans to be made. ”It will allow us to be free from the injustices of this kingdom. To be free to do what we want without having to follow or bow down to anyone. We are going to be much stronger, quicker and powerful than that puny boy king of Vamos.”
