It coated the back of her tongue, thick and rotting. She walked in over broken glass and dead leaves. The soles of her shoes scraped against the concrete floor, scritch, scratch. With every step she took, cold sweat slid another inch down her back. She could feel it tracing a slow, cold line between her shoulder blades. Her toe hit something sticky. She stopped abruptly. Looked down. A large puddle of dark red liquid. It had already dried completely, its edges blackened, seeping into the cracks in the concrete floor.
