Before I could think to ask him what his name was, Duncan groaned and sat up from the floor. He twisted his bulbous head towards him and scowled, “Who the fuck are you?” The god didn’t skip a beat, reluctantly looking down at Duncan as though he were no more important than the wood scattered along the floor. “You want to know who I am and not the savage beast ready to gouge your eyes out?” Duncan craned his head my way, his hands still clutching his round belly. How rude! I scoffed at the two of them. “First I’m a rabid wolf and now a savage beast. Is that how you plan on doing it? You’re just going to insult me to death?”

With a cigarette in his hand as he blew smoke out, through his nose. He had escaped, and now, he'd remain hidden till he gets back on his feet. For now, he would take care of his bruised bones, work on his skills, recruit men, train them, then come out to destroy Austin for good. He would be ready, and this time, not just ready, he would attack unannounced. His eyes grew maliciously harder as he dragged a smoke into his mouth, bringing it back outside through his nostrils. “Boss. Nothing about him. He's nowhere to be found.” Duncan’s voice sounded.

"Duncan." His name is a flame setting every nerve in my body ablaze. I've touched myself to that name. I've fantasized about it. Now Duncan Willis is inches away, his lips hovering near mine, saying his name, his warm, cinnamon breath caressing my cheeks, and his spicy cologne filling my lungs. I swallow. "Duncan...yeah, right," I say stupidly as I lift my right hand and extend it to him, ready to shake. "I'm Kimbra."

I asked, and Duncan sighed. “The entire area where the half-breeds lived was cordoned off and activated with magical alarms. If anyone entered, whoever it was, it would notify us,” Duncan explained, and I nodded. “There was a notification, I sent guards, and at first nothing was seen, but one of my most experienced men decided to check the caves and found Warner, wounded, trying to heal himself and with nothing but the clothes he was wearing and the wound in his side, an arrow dipped in aconite.”

He did not say another word, he just watched her disappear down the hall with Andy in tow. The door at the end of the corridor groaned open. Duncan stepped into the dim light of the dungeon. He was entirely covered in thick, white medical bandages that wrapped tightly around his broad chest, shoulders, and thighs. The severe silver burns from the collapsing mining town still pulled painfully at his flesh, and every step he took required a massive amount of physical willpower. But he refused the wheelchair. He refused the pain medication. His silver-grey eyes burned with a lethal, unyielding clarity that made the chained prisoners involuntarily shrink back against the wall.

“Human bullets… what the hell are you talking about, aren't we all humans here?” He grinned wide like he was enjoying whatever psychological warfare he was taking me on. “Oh, gracious no honey. I'm not human.” “What?” I blinked, still hung up on the part where he said Duncan was still alive. “Right, of course. Duncan wouldn't tell you. I have to say, I respect his decision. Humans can be very weird and narcissistic when they find out they aren't the Apex predator they thought they were..” He said, stroking his cheek.

The thought of him standing over me with his red eyes boring holes in me made me involuntarily shiver. Duncan was also supposed to be intimidating, but the air around him was definitely different. He gave off more of a golden retriever vibe while Lucien's was a Doberman. “He simply wants you to be around during the blood rage, since the full moon is in the next few days and he's going to need assistance,” Duncan explained my purpose but still did a good job at explaining literally nothing as he punched in the code to the front door. How close were they exactly for Duncan to know the password to his door?
