“Contact me if anything changes.” I head upstairs. The dungeons are in the basement under the packhouse. They have reinforced walls and ceilings so that anything that happens down here cannot be heard outside these walls. Werewolves are violent by nature, but that doesn’t mean that pups and pregnant mothers need to hear me beating the shit out of someone. When I get to the top of the stairs, I find Dustin waiting for me. “What’s up?” I ask.

Then I dropped the news like a stone into still water. “We have a new threat.” Murmurs. I raised a hand. “Not rogues. Not exiles. Something else entirely.” I looked each of them in the eye before continuing. “One of our dungeon guards was killed. Not just killed—ripped apart. His neck was bitten by something that wasn’t a normal wolf. Our healer says it’s a mutation. A rare species. Stronger. More dangerous. And lethal.” Elder Merek narrowed his eyes. “How do we know it wasn’t just a rogue trying something new?”

We have just two allies: the Panther Lord Pack and the Retrievers Pack. After scrutinizing most of the files, my legs begin to ache, more like muscle contraction. Even if I engage in a fight with anyone right now, I don’t even have any weapons to aid me. It was going to be a futile fight. Before I can even get myself ready, the door blasts open and I am heavily thrown against the wall making me groan in pain as blood splashes out of my mouth.

She blanched slightly at the mental image, but shook her head. "He'd regrow it. If your arm was ripped off, you'd likely bleed to death in just a few minutes. See the difference? Humans are fragile. That's why they're our natural-" He broke off and gave her a look of discomfort that was hilarious to see on his face because it looked so out of place. "Prey?" she supplied in a falsely sweet voice. "Yes," he said after a long hesitation. "Humans are our natural prey. But Paoli and I try very hard not to kill."
