With a bite, Elizabeth tastes the sweet juices of the fruit. They’re not domesticated but they have so much fruity flesh… David started eating. He rarely eats meat or fish but eats vegetables selectively. But she discovered that he only ate roots and not vegetables, so when she asked him why, he said he didn't like it. What a strange man, vegetables are the easiest thing to eat but he doesn't eat them. Therefore, on their dining table, there will usually be a plate of vegetables for her and a plate of root soup for him.

Lauryn followed them and helped Violet who was getting ready to separate the spinach leaves from the stems. “You’re doing great, Violet,” Lauryn encouraged her. Suddenly, Mark arrived unexpectedly with a new root crop that smelled like spoilt food. “Hey, everyone,” he greeted them. “I brought some new roots to add to our stock.” Violet wrinkled her nose at the smell. “Why do we always collect roots?” she asked curiously. Lauryn smiled at her. “Because herbs and roots are very important for our health, Violet. They give us strength and keep us healthy.”

That isn’t important right now though. “Here is our crops area. The root vegetables and vines are this way.” We make our way around a few large fields that are growing items like wheat and corn. I can see that Pine Woods grows the majority of their food and that is good. A pack should be selfsustained whenever possible.

The ink and the blood didn't just sit in the snow; they turned into **Roots**. Massive, obsidian tendrils erupted from the earth, reaching up like the fingers of a buried giant. They didn't pass through me. They **Caught** me. The roots wrapped around my flickering ankles, my waist, my throat. They weren't cold; they were burning with a fierce, wild heat

This is muscle memory from years of helping Mom in this garden. The dandelions come up with their long thick taproots, the kind that go down forever, searching for water in the drought. Sometimes they break off halfway and I can feel the snap in my fingers, that small vegetable violence. The crabgrass is harder—those shallow spreading roots that seem to go on forever, each clump revealing more, like pulling on a string and finding it attached to a whole web underground, everything connected, and if I could just find the center, the source, I could pull it all up at once, but I never find the center.

Something solid to fill the empty pit in my stomach. I dragged the rabbit toward a tree with wide roots, tucking myself beneath it as I ate. I didn’t chew slowly. I couldn’t. I devoured it in desperate bites until there was nothing left but bones too small to matter. The hunger eased a little, not gone completely but enough that I could think again without feeling like I was dying.

"Interesting." She smiled at his reaction to the odd vegetable. "It's a very hard root vegetable. If you tried to eat it raw, you'd break your teeth..." she informed with a laugh. "Maybe it's an acquired taste. But it's one of my favorites. I have been eating it since childhood though." She knew many of the things they had there weren't to the taste of strangers. Trolls from the north had visited six months before, and watching them eat some of the native fruits and vegetables had been quite amusing.
