They didn't need telepathy to understand each other; they had learned the language of the wind in the trees and the shift of the tides. ​I stood on the bluff overlooking the bay, my scarred hand resting on the hilt of a wood-axe. I was thirty-three, but in the reflection of the tidal pools, I saw a woman who had lived a thousand years.

​The Arctic Vault, once a silent tomb of Miller Vane’s secrets, now vibrated with a frequency that felt like the heartbeat of a god. The pulse-wave from the golden ship, the "Ancestry-Pulse", had bypassed the lead-quartz shielding as if it were nothing more than rice paper. Outside, the red fog of the Blood-Gate was being burned away, replaced by a blinding, oppressive gold that turned the Arctic sky into a sea of liquid fire.

And something on the other side was pulling the chain. ​"Marcus," I said, my voice dropping an octave as the silver light began to bleed into my own vision. "Tell your 'Guest' that this hospital is full. We aren't taking any more patients." ​The grey-eyed boy tilted his head, his jaw unhinging slightly further than humanly possible. "We aren't here for a bed, Sovereign. We’re here for the marrow." ​The first wave of the Echo hit us then—not a physical blow, but a psychic scream that shattered every window in the North Quad.

Only the soft hum of awareness pulsed beneath everything. Ari stood at the edge of Hollowreach’s terrace, looking down upon the silver plains below. In the distance, the remnants of the Echofields shimmered faintly, like thought caught between sleep and waking. She could feel it still the echo of every consciousness that had once merged in the storm. Millions of lives breathing as one. But for the first time in what felt like an eternity, the world was… still. Siran joined her, wearing her usual leather tunic patched with silver threads. She set her sword against the stone railing. “Quiet,” she murmured, as if the word itself might disturb the balance.
