Does your father know you killed innocent women and children just so you can hang a faux portrait of him in a palace paved with blood?” From what I knew about him. And those,” he gestured at the glitter swirls, “are his magic sparkles.” Claire clapped. “Kid, this is epic.” “It’s incredible,” I agreed honestly. “I love it.” Eddie beamed. “I named him Sparkle Fang.” I bit my lip to keep from laughing. “Sparkle Fang is a very strong name.”

Edgar was propped up against the wall, sleeping on a plastic chair beside the door. “Edgar?” I tried to wake him up with a throaty whisper. Even my own voice felt strange to me like it belonged to an alien in one of those space track movies. “Edgar!” I called again deep enough this time. He met me with a snore. No one had to tell me that any further attempts to wake him up with my voice would be a lost cause. He was at least the length of three double seater sofas way from me while I sounded like I had spent the whole day learning how to croak like a frog.

“I am the fastest monkey!” Edgar surprises me, then, by hunching his shoulders and swinging his arms, making wild ape noises and moving towards the trunk of the tree, playing along. Ian screams in delight and scurries further out on his branch as Edgar begins to climb slowly up. “Stay away from me, you big gorilla!” He yells, laughing as he climbs higher. “Careful!,” I say, hating to still their fun but worried, as always, for their safety.

I shouted, my head whipping from side to side as I tried to locate where the sound came from. Another croak, this time from the chair to my left. I dragged myself out of the hearth and hurried towards. There, on the edge, was Celyn the frog, looking absolutely unbothered. But when I tried to pick her up, she jumped away. I cursed loudly, nearly falling on my face as that stupid frog evaded me time and again. Finally, I was able to corner her in the hearth. I threw her into my backpack, retrieved my phone from where it fell.
