But before she could craft another retort, her own bitterness betrayed her. “She’s sick, you know,” she said, her tone colder than she intended. “Timtim. Fever. Aariz hasn’t left her side since morning. That’s why I’ll never get his attention—his world starts and ends with her.” Ishtiyaq’s expression shifted instantly. His lazy smirk evaporated, replaced by a sudden sharpness in his eyes. “She’s… sick?” he asked, his voice too quick, too restless. The subtle change didn’t escape Sana. She tilted her head, studying him carefully, and for the first time, she noticed the crack in his composure. His hands twitched at his sides, his jaw tightened.

I didn't dare look behind me. But it followed. I could feel it. The thing from beyond. When we reached the water's edge, I collapsed to my knees. The river should've offered safety, sanctuary. But it boiled, bubbles rising, steam rising higher. Malen cried out and fell, convulsing. His body twisted unnaturally, veins glowing a violent purple. I screamed and reached for him. I wanted to save him at all costs. He didn't deserve so much pain. It hurt me to see him like this.

The person at the edge of the pool finally spoke up. “You’ve offended somebody you shouldn’t have. That person has sent me to torment you.” Before I could say anything, I was tossed back into the water. It happened many times. Every time I felt like I was about to drown, I was lifted out of the water. Finally, I was left on the ground as my tormentor made a phone call. “It’s done, boss.” I could hear Connor on the other end of the line. “Leave immediately. I’ll deal with the rest of it.”

Listen to me, please. She pleaded gently, trying to coerce that side of her that hadn’t already rationalized her actions into seeing reason with her. But right before her eyes, she watched her retreat deeper into whatever cocoon of insanity nesting in her mind. Claire stood and dusted her shorts, a grin slowly forming on her face. A mad look replaced the sober look that had been on her face just some seconds ago.

After the celebration, I returned to my room, exhausted, only to find Whitney already inside, holding my reservation slip. My pupils narrowed as I blurted, "What are you doing?" She waved the slip, a hint of malice flashing across her face. "So, you want the antidote?" Without warning, she pulled out a dagger coated in silver nitrate and slashed her own arm. I didn't understand what she was trying to do, but I instinctively stepped forward to stop her. However, she seized the moment to shove the dagger into my hand. Tobias and Nicholas rushed in just in time to see Whitney collapsing to the ground, clutching her injured arm.

Once it cracks, it doesn’t take much to shatter. A low groan cut through the silence. I turned slowly, my stomach flipping as I saw Edward stir on the floor. Another groan, and he rolled onto his side, wincing as he dragged himself up onto his elbows.

It thrashes against the thin edge of what I am, against the thin edge of my resolve, against the thin and unbearably loose edge of my human skin. The loose threads of my sanity slip. I am more than I can hold, more than I can hold back, more than I can be. The force of it leaves me breathless, leaves me raw, leaves me. It leaves me, and it does not come back.
