The sight of Elena, a known rival to the Danvers family, only made Megan’s anger grow. Elena’s smile disappeared slightly at the response from Megan, although she did manage to keep her composure. Despite feeling offended, she chose not to react in a hostile way. I have never been this curious about someone else's conversation but…I wonder what her friend said that had her laughing so hard. This is the first time in three days that I have seen a genuine smile on her face. Even though I didn't want to say it out loud, she has one of the best smiles that I have come across. Fifteen minutes of me being careless, distracted, complacent. Elena pulled her head back slowly, her big eyes wide, watery, and completely bloodshot as she stared directly into my face. Her cheeks were flushed a brilliant, messy pink, a single stray tear hanging off the tip of her nose. Despite the terror she'd just endured, a tiny, lopsided smile tugged at the corner of her swollen lips. That smile… God, that smile, it was the most beautiful thing I'd ever seen, fragile and brave all at once. It spoke of resilience I hadn't known she possessed, a strength that humbled me completely.

I couldn't help but smile as well.

Adele was about to reply when Leonard suddenly lifted his hand toward Elena. Not to carry her. Only to gently brush the child’s soft hair. And when Elena giggled softly at the touch— Something in Leonard’s chest felt strange again. The warmth that surfaced felt far too natural. He didn’t even realize he was smiling while looking at Elena. Vanessa noticed everything. And this time, she truly didn’t like it. “Leonard.” He was still watching Elena. “Hm?” “You don’t even realize you’re smiling again.” Leonard finally turned toward her.

Elena still smiling shook her head. "Its okay, Charlenne, what is it? I promise not to bite." Elena tried not to laugh at her own little inside joke. Charlenne looked up at Elena and gave her a nervous smile. "I'm sorry, Elena. I didn't mean to do that. It's nothing." Charlenne couldn't meet Elena's gaze and her voice was barely above a whisper. "Charlenne, it is something. You've never acted like this with me before. What is it?"
