I really pressed them one by one. Miraculously, the elevator begins to close but with the symbol pointing upwards. "Why is this elevator going up? We have to get down!"

The carriage beeped; it understood her command. The elevator registered her command, shut the door, and carried her up. She was alone, lifting to the top floor. 7:05 a.m. flashed in digital letters above the doors beside a moving arrow that told Dina the direction the machine took her. During her trip to the top, the elevator plays a light jingle. She tapped her foot to the rhythm. Clack, Clack, Clack. The machine moved up from the ground floor to floors—15, 16, 17, 18th.

“I’ve been swamped too. Work’s been crazy.” We both stepped into the elevator, the doors sliding closed with a soft whoosh. The ride started like normal. Soft music played overhead, a jazzy instrumental version of something I vaguely recognized. Amber stood to one side, checking her phone. I stood on the other, pretending to do the same. Then the lights flickered. We both looked up. “Uh…” I started. The elevator jolted once, hard and then stopped. “Are you kidding me?” Amber muttered.

Just as she began to think her signal in the elevator was too weak to place a call through, an annoyingly loud teenager proved her wrong, walking into the large steel box on the seventh floor while watching I*******m reels on his phone, which was connected to a small Bluetooth speaker dangling from his hip as he pushed the button for the 10th floor. Lola didn’t realize how low her battery was as she kept trying, until her phone ultimately gave up on her entirely. Exasperated beyond comprehension, she leaned on the reflective walls of the elevator, hoping that her trip across the city wasn’t in vain.
