His aunt gives a pointed look at our joined hands, at which Eli immediately lets go of mine. Scratching the back of his neck, he says, “This is Jo. She’s my friend from school. Jo, this is my aunt.”
“Hello Jo,” she says, offering me her hand. “Welcome to our home.”
“Thank you,” I tell her, returning her warm smile and handshake.
“You’re so pretty,” Kai says, half-hiding behind his mother. “Why aren’t you Eli’s girlfriend?”
