She demanded, her voice cutting through the stillness. Alex jumped, his hands freezing over the keyboard, “Emma, you scared me.” “What are you doing?” She repeated, stepping into the room. Alex quickly closed the laptop, his movements defensive, “I was checking the trap, just making sure it’s working.” Emma’s eyes narrowed, “At one in the morning? Without telling anyone?” “I didn’t think I needed permission.” Alex snapped, his voice rising slightly. Emma’s jaw tightened as she stepped closer, “You’re not exactly in a position to be defensive right now.”
