Suddenly, my mind listened to the other voice rather than my numbers. It was slow and methodical. Inhale and exhale. I followed their direction and my head didn’t feel as light. Instead, I felt a headache forming and I closed my eyes, leaning further into the door.
“Emmett said that he didn’t want to meet our birth mother. That she abandoned us to that hell. I thought…maybe I could help. If…we could together work on being happy then it would be okay.”
