Smiles. Jessica frowned. Not big exaggerated smiles. Not perfect smiles. Real ones. The kind that sat quietly on someone's face when they forgot they were being watched. The kind that arrived before people even realised they were happy. She stared at the pages for a long moment. Because she'd spent years drawing sadness. Years. Sad eyes. Lonely people. Shadows. Empty spaces. Even when she drew trees or landscapes, there had always been something lonely hidden somewhere inside them. And now somehow, without noticing...

She said with a shrug. "I see." Emily rushed back to the sitting room with her drawing in her hand. She showed it to Diego who couldn't help but laugh. "It's beautiful, isn't it, daddy?" She asked. She had made a horrible sketch of him. "Yes, sweetheart, it is."

I would wait till the end. It has been weeks since I have drawn someone's cartoon. Perhaps I only do it when I am sad and happy at the same time. This time, I want to draw a cartoon for Remo. The name alone brings calmness to me. I start from his head and then his round eyes.

Noah stares at the silly drawing on the sand that now looks like a hairless mutant and raises a curved brow. "It's missing both ears."

It was hard. Josh wanders in, still in his dinosaur pajamas, and climbs into Mike's lap without hesitation. "Mike, want to see my drawing?" "Always, buddy. What did you make?" Josh produces a crumpled piece of paper covered in colorful scribbles. "It's our family. That's Mommy, and that's Daddy Damon, and that's you, and that's me, and that's Mr. Hop." The drawing is abstract in the way three-year-old art always is, circles for heads, lines for bodies, generous applications of glitter that Josh somehow got access to.

"Emma, sometimes it's easier to show feelings than talk about them. Can you draw me a picture of how you feel?" Emma picked up the crayons and started drawing. She worked intently for twenty minutes while Dr. Chen and I sat quietly. When she finished, she pushed the paper across the table. Dr. Chen looked at it. Her face went pale. I leaned over to see. The drawing showed a small figure—clearly a child—locked inside a cage made of black bars. Outside the cage, two large figures faced each other. One had sharp teeth and claws. The other had wild hair and angry eyes. Both were drawn in dark, violent colors.

The Ecostanian-style palace decoration looked luxurious and grand. Flora opened the small bag on her back and took out a picture book. “Mommy look, this is the family portrait I draw. This is Mommy, this is Daddy, and this is Jason, this is Jerry, and this is me.” There were five cartoon-like characters in the drawing. Although the drawing look was crooked and very abstract, each character was grinning from ear to ear. When I saw it, I smiled until my eyes turned red, “Oh! Baby, you are so awesome. You draw it so well.”

He rushes in and stops at the edge of Adrian’s bed. Adrian’s eyes widen in surprise. “Hey, champ.” Liam pulls out a folded paper from his bag. “I made you a drawing.” Adrian tries to sit up straighter. “Let’s see.” Liam hands it over carefully. It’s a crayon sketch of the three of us—me, Liam, and Adrian—holding hands under a bright yellow sun. There’s even a dog beside us, though we don’t have one. Adrian stares at it, clearly touched. “This is amazing.”

But they all grabbed a marker pen and started drawing anywhere they could reach. They all seemed to know what they were drawing. When they finished drawing their individual pictures, they went to a larger blank wall. Where Max drew a big circle, Eden then drew a slightly smaller circle inside of it. Before Jaxon drew some lines connecting the circles. It made it look a little like a clock. But Eden added some wavy lines at the bottom of it. When they finished, they went to a sofa, curled up with Evie and cried. I looked at their pictures. Max had drawn a man’s shaver but with small lightening bolts coming off it, Jaxon had drawn a bucket and Eden had drawn a knife.
