I hear a faint voice calling Ellen's name from somewhere in the diner downstairs, followed by her muffled reply. "That's great then. Enjoy your break. I gotta go," Ellen says, and I listen intently as her footsteps fade away down the hallway. I release a breath I didn't realize I was holding, sagging with relief.
