I held onto a tree, trying to steady myself, but even the slightest step made pain shoot through my legs, and the sound of the horses grew even louder. From a distance, I could see the torch lights.
“No, no, no, no, no,” I whispered. “I can't let Gabriel's men take me back to that devilish place.”
I heard a branch snap behind me, and I started running, even with the pain.
