It was quiet, almost sacred, with sunlight streaming through the large windows and rows of books inviting me to lose myself in their worlds. Her small voice read the shapes of the letters aloud, haltingly, not yet forming the full words but tasting their rhythm. She traced the dragon’s curved horns, then its tail, then the tower stones one by one.

Eva comes and adds another book. This continues for a few minutes before Eva gives up. She’d kept ten books balanced easily. Her neck aches, but she has clearly shown the poise Eva is looking for. Eva takes the books back, and asks Celine to do the same thing, this time without the books. Eva watches closely, but seems to find no fault in how she was walking now. Eva nods, and holds out three different and slightly thicker books.
