“You realize she’s going to memorize this place by the time she’s five.” “I know,” Evelyn murmured, pride threaded through her voice. On the rug, Eva had already chosen. The book was thick, with a worn blue cover and an illustration of a dragon coiled around a tower. She sat cross - legged, fingers pressing lightly against the embossed scales on the cover before opening it. The illustrations inside were rich — watercolor skies, mountains, and dragons with eyes like jewels. Her small voice read the shapes of the letters aloud, haltingly, not yet forming the full words but tasting their rhythm. She traced the dragon’s curved horns, then its tail, then the tower stones one by one.

I waited in the lobby of RSS for the beautiful bombshell that was permanently ingrained to my brain. Looking like she was straight off the runway, Evelyn stepped out of the elevator in her sexy black dress, red “fuck me” heels and a black trenchcoat.
