The surrounding ruins swallowed the sound he made, a final rasp of defiance or pain. Then there was silence, Akira’s body limp beneath Asher’s blood-soaked paws. Breathing heavily, Asher shifted back into his human form, his skin smeared in crimson, hair wild, chest still heaving. He looked down at Akira, lifeless, and let out a guttural scream. Fury still pulsed through him, and he wished Akira would awaken, so he could kill him again for every person whom he killed that he loved. But he was forever still, and it was over. It was time to find Makena and claim his birthright.

Before I can look at his face, the world spins again. It’s a dark alley, and I’m holding Asher, crying with him while whispering, “You and me against the world, baby.
