The book is published on a Tuesday in October. It arrives in boxes at the foundation. Real physical books with my name on the cover and the story of everything that came after inside. The second book. The one about healing and ice rituals and children growing up and the specific mundane work of choosing someone again and again.

The book came out on a Thursday. This too felt appropriate, though she had not chosen the date — Yetunde had chosen it, based on the particular calculations that publishers made about timing and market and the specific window of reception that gave a book the best chance of finding the audience that needed it. Thursday. Not a Tuesday, with all the history that day carried. Not a Monday, which felt too much like a beginning. Thursday — midweek, midstride, the particular day of someone who has been going for a while and has not yet stopped.

Both at the same time. We worked late on Thursdays. Not because anyone decided we should. It just happened the way rhythms happen when people care about the same thing. By eight o’clock the floor would go quiet and it was just the four of us and whatever the delivery app had disappointed us with and the specific productive tension of people who could feel themselves getting close to something. That particular Thursday it was lukewarm pad thai and a spring roll that had given up on itself entirely.
