"The week before August should have honest things in it." He was quiet for a moment. "The diner Wednesday," he said. "Wednesday." She paused. "And the coffee place Thursday morning." "Before the surprise." "Before whatever Thursday is." She looked at him. "The New York coffee place. The extreme one." "Once a week." "Thursday is once this week." She paused. "Special occasion." "Thursday isn't an occasion yet. You don't know what it is." "It's the week before August." She held his eyes. "Every day is an occasion."

I had chosen Thursday. Not for any particular reason — not an anniversary, not a significant date in the architecture of what we were. Just Thursday, which was her day at the bookstore followed by her afternoon free, which meant she would be on Carver Street at the end of her shift and the light would be right and there would be no occasion attached to it, no expectation, nothing she had to dress for or prepare for. Just a Thursday at four o'clock. On Wednesday evening she came home with the specific quality of someone who had been carrying something since midday.

It came along with haunting memories and sad smiles. Walking towards the kitchen I foraged for any sort of snack that could fill my growling stomach. I groaned when I found only a packet of chips and some biscuits. I was in the mood for a meal. Curse Mrs. Kane for scheduling the due date for the submission of all the assignments for the end of this week only. Double curses to Stacy for foisting all her work on me. Jake must be cursed thrice for making me his target again and telling me at the last minute that he was no longer in the mood to complete his part of the work.

Before I realized it, Thursday had become my favorite day of the week. It wasn’t something I planned. I never sat down and decided that Thursdays mattered. It just happened little by little, so slowly that I didn’t notice it at first. Then, during the third week, I showed up at the library and she wasn’t there. I sat at our usual table, opened my textbook, and told myself it didn’t matter. People get busy. People miss days. We weren’t friends. We didn’t have plans. A shared table in a library wasn’t exactly an appointment.

It rained again that Thursday. Not the sharp kind that drums against windows, but a steady, patient rain that softened everything it touched. I’d spent most of the day pretending I wasn’t waiting for him. I cleaned, read a few pages of a book I didn’t register and I even brewed tea I forgot to drink. The apartment felt too still — as if every corner held its breath, waiting for something to shift.
