One Echo went down screaming as a dart hit him. I closed my eyes and reached for the resonance inside me. Kael’s hand gripped my waist, grounding me. I focused on the pleasure still lingering in my body from earlier, on the bond between us, and pushed. A wave of blue-gold energy rippled outward from me. The soldiers stumbled. Some dropped their weapons as their own tech started glitching. Several nearby Echoes steadied, their eyes clearing. “It’s working!” Rafe shouted. But it wasn’t enough. More soldiers poured in. One of them spotted me and raised a strange rifle.

He stood up, placing a foot of freezing air between us. "Get some sleep, Nora," Silas said softly, his voice hollow and resigned. "Seventy-two days left." He turned and walked toward his side of the bed, leaving me sitting in the dark, my skin burning, my heart racing, and the terrifying realization dawning on me that the "detox" was failing.

"Aria. What do you think happens when you reach that terminal? Echo is part of you now. You can't excise it without excising yourself." She believed part of that. She had believed it for weeks. She reached the terminal anyway. Her hands found the interface. The screen bloomed to life, blue and vast, the architecture of everything she had built spread out before her in elegant branching structures that she recognized the way you recognize your own handwriting. He had a subtle sense of humor when he let it show. Then the lights flickered once. Twice. And went out completely. The archive room plunged into total darkness. The sudden blackness hit like a wall. Grace couldn’t see her own hand in front of her face. “Miles?” she called out, her voice echoing a little in the big room. No answer at first. Then she heard his breathing; fast and shallow. “Miles, are you okay?” A chair scraped. She heard him moving, then a soft thud like he had backed into a shelf.
