The sudden impact ended his struggle, and the haunting voices in his head ceased. However, the fear that had gripped his mind lingered, making it hard for him to breathe. He took a deep breath, filling his lungs with air, and then exhaled rapidly. As he lifted his head from the steering wheel, blood gushed out from the gash on his forehead. I then remembered the door bouncing back open because of a piece of foam slightly sitting in between the doorframe preventing it from closing.

The sky over the skyline flickered violently. The horizontal beam inside the frame cracked along its length. Then, the second constructor began to ascend slowly back into the frame. Retreat. The vertical pillars thinned dimmed and with a final blinding pulse, the entire framework over the city collapsed into a single narrow line. Then nothing but empty clouds with silence. Sirens continued wailing in confused disarray below. I knelt in the crystallized clearing, holding Kade’s limp body. “Kade,” I whispered urgently.

“The Core is dying.” Silence followed. Then Ethan understood. Immediately. And his face fell. Because he knew exactly what came next. Then the Core announced: SYSTEM FAILURE IMMINENT. NETWORK COLLAPSE IN 03:00. The white space began breaking apart. Chunks of memory falling into darkness. Entire sections disappearing. The world tilted on its axis, and the air itself seemed to scream. ​As the frame around Kieran began to shatter and the layers started to bleed into each other, the system unleashed its final defense. A wall of pure, freezing force slammed down between us, and the crack began to snap shut with him still halfway inside it.
