This was an unwelcome issue but not a surprise. Sophia Floria was my best friend. She was a fairy with purple mage magic who I’d met at the small elementary school my territory had. The other wolves in my territory had bullied her for being different, with her silver hair and her purple eyes. I’d stood up for Sophia and the rest was history.

My heart races. I run to the table, grab my phone, and unlock the screen with trembling fingers. The notifications explode. Messages, tags, mockery. “The perfect student sold herself to pay for college.” “Sleeping with a powerful businessman in exchange for privileges.” Photos. Some are of Dante kissing me against the window, others more explicit. Pictures taken from outside, exposed to the entire world. My whole body shakes. A new message arrives. The name flashes on the screen: Laura. “I always thought it was strange for a poor girl to study with us. But I never imagined you’d sleep with both father and son for money, Sofia.”

Sofia quickly took the chance and said, "You have to remember what you promised me. You have to cook it for me every time my craving kicks in." Severin took the chance to tease her. "Weren't you the one who asked me not to kill the wild hare because it's cute? I don't see you have a problem eating it just now." Embarrassingly, Sofia pursed her lips and said, "Well, I didn't know it could taste this good. Think about it. Normally we can hardly finish eating an enchanted beast because they are normally relatively large in size. But this wild hare is just slightly bigger than a normal rabbit and it's just the right size for one meal."

Oz, another warrior in the crowd, loudly asked. I looked at the elders with a smug expression on my face. I was proud of our people and the unity that we now had, but I wasn't expecting to hear the words that left Mabel's mouth .... "If need be, so be it ...." Mabel was the first to raise her hand, a ball of fire quickly growing in her palm. Screams returned to the air as she pulled back and launched the fire towards the crowd of fairies behind us. For the first time since he arrived, I was thankful for Fafnir as he launched a ball of his own fire, the collision causing an explosion of bright embers as the fairies used their powers to put them out.

"But, on my life, I am certain it won't be." A soft chuckle from her side made her risk a glance at Beckett. He and Tobin were doing their best to maintain their composure. Aoife drew herself to her full height, glaring down her button nose at Bailey. "Halflings don't belong in Faerie. You should be home, slaughtering the masses."

My magic was reacting to my temper, making the air around me shimmer with a heat that had nothing to do with the sun. "SOFIA! WHAT DO YOU HAVE TO SAY FOR YOURSELF?" I barked, my voice echoing off the stone walls of the Willow entrance. A few fairies nearby gasped, their translucent wings fluttering in surprise, but I didn't care about being polite. I didn't care about the Wolf Mother title right now. I was just a woman who had been lied to. Sofia turned around slowly, her face a mask of guilt. She looked everywhere but at me. She looked at the grass, the trees, the sky before finally meeting my eyes. "Kyla, honey, it's not what it looks like..."

Chimere watched Sofia decline to her bed sitting on her legs. “The highest deceit in life is when one starts believing their lie. Sofia Adwell you seize to be one of us when you turn your back on your people, you seize to be regarded as one of our kin when you choose to slaughter the people you were born to protect.
