Gwyneth leaned close to Eirene’s ear and whispered, “Give this to the Alpha. Just say it’s a birthday gift from you.”
Eirene froze. “What?” she asked, confused.
Gwyneth gave no answer. She had already stepped back, smiling widely. “Have fun,” she said lightly, as if nothing unusual had happened. Then she walked away and greeted another guest casually.
Eirene stared after Gwyneth, bewildered. Her hand was still clenched tightly around the object. Slowly, she lowered her gaze and opened her fingers.
Resting in her palm was a necklace. Its silver chain was thin and delicate. It bore a small, cylindrical pendant that she assumed was made of wood.
