Reading a romance novel was something that I secretly enjoyed but usually never had enough time to do due to my busy schedule. Since I was a kid, I had always loved fairy tales. The kind of stories that drew me in, and made me feel like I was transported into a magical world, and feel emotions like fear, happiness, worry, or excitement - to name a few. It felt good to be away from the harsh reality, even if it was only for a while. Because in fairy tales, they always end with ‘happily ever after’. Fairies in real life had nothing to do with what she saw on television or read in books. Fairies were not happy, wish granting, playful little winged creatures. They were bawdy, strong warriors that were some of the best fighters in existence. Apparently, someone came up with the idea of “fairy tales” as a crude joke against fairies. If all other fairies were like Donovan, it was a joke they didn’t find funny…at all! He could get violent over the mention of Peter Pan, Lily found out about that the hard way.

He glanced up at Genie for just a moment, and she just nodded. We had all heard about the forests of Fairy, and it wasn't the Fae that you had to watch out for. Hell, there weren't even any predatory animals in that forest. No, the plants there were the predators. They can and will stalk and kill just as well as any animal, honestly, most people say they do even better. Spewing toxic substances, creating illusions to draw in their prey. It was the most dangerous terrain in the realm next to the dead plains.

So often I felt like I was walking around in a fog, waiting to start living. Until Arthur, that is. He makes me feel like I’m really alive, like I’ve fallen into one of those stories. The problem is, not all fairytales have happy endings. In fact, most of the early tales were quite gruesome morality tales designed to warn and scare. They were never meant to be a guide for how to live your life. I take a sharp right turn down a long corridor of books. I know my way by heart and soon find my favorite bench, near a window, with all my favorite books. Today didn’t feel like a fairy tale day. I feel like fantasy has failed me.

In the evenings, around the hearths of home, we teach the rules by which we share this world with the brethren through story. Tales of lovers separated by misfortune, the vain punished with disfigurement, of knights enchanted into forever sleep, and of princesses locked into towers. We seek out Seers to foretell the future, and mages to bespell swords, but are wary of the Fae with their costly altruism and deceptive beauty, the mischief of household imps, and sirens who sing ship to wreckage.

The kitchen was an open galley style with top quality appliances, storage galore, all the cooking utensils you would find at home, and fabulous views.

She chuckled to hide her embarrassment but maybe she was liking this impossible fantasy too! I didn’t know how to reply to that and kept staring at her. Her breath mixed with mine and I could smell our hot breathes. She turned her gaze back to the sky and taking in a deep breath she spoke, “You know when I was a kid, my mother used to read me fairy tales! Those story where there is always a handsome prince who falls in love with the princess, or the beast who falls in love with the beauty! Those stories made me believe from a young age that someday I will also find my prince who would love me and we will build our own world full of love and happiness!”
