Fresh air hit them instantly along with violent snowfall tearing across the peaks outside. Night covered the mountains completely now. Lightning split through black skies overhead while the ruins behind them continued collapsing into themselves. But they were alive. For now. Kaelan stepped onto the cliff edge first before turning toward the others with an irritated expression. “Next time we invade cursed immortal mountains, I vote somewhere warmer.” Dylan looked exhausted. “There will not be a next time.” Kaelan smiled faintly. “That’s what people always say before making terrible decisions.” Freya watched him quietly.

Minutes later, the first flakes began to fall. At first, they were the size of fingernails. Within two minutes, they had swelled into thick goose-feather snow, pouring from the black sky in a blinding curtain. The wind howled. The snowfall turned violent, as if someone had ripped open the clouds and hurled the sky straight down onto Volaris. There was no warning or easing in. Only nature, raw and merciless. Even with his fortress walls, Cyrus' pulse quickened. He had lived through the Frostfall once before. He knew how cruel it could be. Could his 1,600,000-dollar safehouse truly withstand what was coming?

The Northern Mountains rose like jagged teeth against the gray sky, their peaks swallowed by clouds heavy with snow. The silence of the summit was absolute, the kind of silence that follows the end of the world. Snow fell in large, lazy flakes, but they were no longer pure white. Winter arrived in the Snow Fork Mountains with gentle snowfall and strong northern winds. Wayfinder moved camp further from the mountain and deeper into the forest, under the cover of trees. The mountains were dangerous this time of year, with avalanches and occasional flash floods that could decimate a camp like ours.

The snow comes sideways off the mountains, sharp and fine, finding every gap between collar and skin and staying there. The small plane rattles through turbulence on the descent and I watch the white landscape expand below us and think about a man who funded a monster for thirty years and is now hiding in a cabin twenty miles from nowhere, hoping nobody comes. The kids fighting in the close quarters of the vehicle does not help the situation any, either. The radio had been turned down to quietly play in the background, but Andy turns it up a bit to hear if there is a weather report being discussed. It takes about ten minutes, but then there is finally one on the air. The man talks about the freezing rain that is causing treacherous driving conditions through out parts of Montana, Wyoming, middle North Dakota and parts of South Dakota. “Crap. It appears that we are going to be driving right into it.” Andy tells his wife.

Chapter 4 The Woman in White Elena's POV “Smile, Elena, the press is to your left.” “I am smiling,” I murmured, forcing a smile without looking at Damon. “Not like you’re walking into a funeral.” “Maybe I am actually doing that.” His jaw was already hardened slightly at that, but he didn’t respond. Typical of him. Three days ago, I had made the greatest discovery of my life, that the snow was a lie. Two nights ago, I still lay beside him, my emotions all over the place, while he slept like a man without guilt. Yesterday, he acted so smoothly, like nothing had happened between us.

It was a smart natural way to do so, and even a demon could not march an army over that kind of devastation and snow volume easily. “Wow, I didn’t think the roar would be so loud even here.” One said, and it had grown. There was even a bit of breeze now through the mountains as the mass volumes of snow went down. It didn’t take long for the snow to reach down the mountain out of view. It was over rather quickly, but still a sight to see. Sybil glanced up at the mountains and setting sun. She’d love to see the beauty summer brought to this place. Hopefully sometime soon, hopefully they could end this war. Have a reprieve from the evils that plagued this land for a time.

Jade's POV ​The mountains didn't care about the Public Ledger. To the jagged, snow-capped peaks of the Bitterroot Range, the collapse of the Cavallo empire was as significant as a single dry leaf falling into a stream. There was no fiber-optic pulse here, no cellular hum, and no watchful entity lurking in the shadows of the pines. There was only the wind, the scent of cedar, and a stillness so vast it felt like a physical weight pressing against my chest.
