"The elder had quite a collection," I said.
She set her cup down. The smile was still in place. The entire picture was still in place: the warm, attentive gaze, the precision, the carefully chosen vulnerability she presented.
Underneath it, something was whirring that had absolutely nothing to do with any of this.
