He stepped back his heel, over the air. "No!" I screamed. The world slowed down. I saw Thorne let go I saw the bundle fall. I did not think, I did not pray. I threw myself off the cliff.

"If you slip on the middle section, you hit the rocks, and you probably break something. If you slip on the last section, you fall fifty feet onto stone, and you die." "Are you trying to scare us?" I asked. "Yes," he said, without a trace of apology in his voice. "Because I want you to be scared. Scared people are careful. Careful people come back. If you go up that cliff thinking it's easy, you'll die up there, and I'll have to explain to Nikki that I let her son fall off a rock." I looked at Damien. I couldn't explain it, but I sensed that my only chance of survival was to take the leap. Peering downwards, I peeped into an abyss where the ground vanished from sight. Turning my gaze back, I realized that the trio of dark figures had dangerously closed the distance. With a pounding heart, I shut my eyes tightly and hurled myself over the edge. The act of plunging off the cliff abruptly jolted me awake, my body instinctively sitting upright in bed.
