The silence mocked me, heavy and absolute.
I lifted my chin toward the unseen Spirit. “I’ve come too far to stop here.” My voice cracked, but I forced the words out. “If I must fall, then I’ll fall. But I won’t turn back.”
Jasmine gave a sharp bark as if agreeing.
With one trembling breath, I took a step forward. My foot left solid ground and my body pitched forward into nothingness. For a heartbeat, my heart forgot how to beat. Air rushed around me, and I braced for the endless fall, for the crushing nothingness.
