My bloody hands painted them red. I laid him on the bank. The pieces of a god. His spirit lay still and reached into me, gently touching my heart. For an instant, I was his skeleton. He used my limbs to rise. The bone man followed my lead, exploring the world through my eyes.

They moved like ghosts toward the blighted plain. The air became thick and smelled sour. The ground was soft and full of dead things. The tower looked like a skeletal finger scratching the sky. They could see many figures moving at its base. Then they saw the bone yard. It was a wasteland of white bone. Great ribs stuck out of the earth like a ruined church. The dragon’s skeleton had been broken apart for pieces. In the center, a few large bones remained, including a massive leg bone and part of a skull. This was where Silas gathered his power.

"Yes, these are the bones of creatures of darkness that have manifested as humans for thousands of years. They are different from the other shadow creatures who, if they die, will turn into dust or smoke. They are undetectable and hard to beat. Therefore, once they are defeated, their bones are like a cup." "Where did you get these bones exactly?" Rain was afraid to hear the answer. "After I kill them, of course!" "She's a handful and I have no idea what I'll do when there are three of them." I place the water on to boil and unwrap a large deer bone. Mandy stays quiet as I look through the cupboard. The silence is broken when a tall stack of wooden bowls that are resting on the floor clatter as they fall. "What is this precious one's name?" Mandy laughs and I smile. "This little hellion is Demetria, named after Dmitri, our clan vampire. I don't think anyone's called her precious since she was two weeks old."

I tried to speak, to say something, anything, but only a moan escaped my lips. My blood stained his hands, his clothes, everything. The anguish on his face was worse than the pain itself. And then everything turned dark, though I didn’t fall fully asleep. My eyelids were just too heavy to keep open. The bullet was silver. I could feel the poison coursing through me, infecting my body, preparing me for death. I felt my strength draining as my body tried to heal on its own, but it couldn’t. The poison wouldn’t allow it, and the harder my body fought, the faster I lost the strength I needed to survive.

My skin prickled all over. I lifted my chin, though I could not see him. “I am here.” The ground shifted again, and I could hear the crackle of bones moving, assembling and snapping into place. The air grew thick with dust and the faint stench of marrow. My breath caught. Then, there was silence. A voice, closer now, said, “I am Calgorr, Spirit of Bones. The one who rules what is left behind.” Jasmine growled at my side, but I gave her a gentle touch of reassurance, though my hands trembled.

Except for existing, Boredbones never does anything,” Skully said. “Not as jolly as the others. Maybe because of a few minor cracks and fractures he has. But he is the obedient one. Boredbones, go with your new master and behave.” Boredbones, just as leisurely and unfazed, walked beside Xanthea, took the fit-it-all purse from her hand and, with a yawn, dived right into the purse, zipping the purse from inside.

I whispered. My voice didn't echo. The Bone Orchard didn't allow for echoes; the walls soaked up sound just as they absorbed light. I sat on the Throne of Bones..... a strange work of art made from human thigh bones, dark metal, and the hardened bones of those who let me down. It vibrated on my back, giving me power for my rise. I opened my eyes. They weren't human eyes anymore. I could see different kinds of magic in the air—purple ribbons of empty energy, grey clouds of decay, and thin, golden threads of life force that I was collecting.
