“It would be very bad for us to just jump into partnership, when we have not fully know all the players, no we can’t do that.” He looked at me, hoping I understood what he was saying, and I nodded my head in agreement. “Exalia, I hope you’re flowing with me,” he said, staring at me. I nodded in confirmation, my mind had started racing, and I just sat on the chair. “Alex, I could feel the prescence of magic,and it was not the type of magic that is pure and builds and heals. This is way different, it’s like an ancient something that feeds off the land, it might even feed off us, who knows?”

Liora and Orion exchanged a glance, sensing the gravity of what was about to unfold. The game had changed, and the stakes had never been higher. "Forbidden magic?" Liora's voice wavered, her eyes locking onto Malachi's. "We've already crossed too many boundaries, and played with too many powers we shouldn’t." Malachi leaned in, his intense gaze holding hers. "Sometimes, to defeat darkness, we must dabble in shadows. The magic I speak of is not something any of us would choose under normal circumstances, but desperate times, my dear."

As she opens her eyes again, a thick gold, hologram-like chain shoots out from the center of her palm and snakes itself around my body. “No, no!” I choke out, clawing at my throat as my airways suddenly feel restricted. “Saffron,” I cry out in a suffocated tone. The moment our gazes collide, he releases my mother and rushes over to me, helping me into an upright position on the sofa. “What’s wrong, darling?” He asks in a panic, his gaze trails over my face. “I have cast a linking spell between us. You kill me, and your precious mate will die.” My mother manages to say while still trying to catch her breath.

“How about this, Azalea, when he comes back I’ll sit with you, and you can ask him. Does that sound good?” “You’ll really let me? Zander has us practising on teddies and things.” Willow laughs slightly. “Teddies are a great starting point, but they take less power, magic and energy to manipulate. Someone as big as Alaric or a vampire requires more effort. As I said though, it’s Alaric's choice. He’s still wary of magic, so I wouldn’t get your hopes up too much.” Azalea nods, thanking Willow before scurrying off back to her room. Willow glances around her; she needs to feel happy here. She doesn’t though, and that feeling she has always had seems to be growing.

Maybe this would change his mind. I turned from the wall, to look down at Sassafras, only to see a thin snake of red power coil around him and let go again. It drifted toward me even as a similar strand of blue flittered across Liam's shoulder, a fluttering piece of green teasing the ends of Charlotte's hair. "All the magicks," Liam said. "The power of the creators." I reached for the red strand, let it slide over my palm. "This is blood magic." Usually just thinking about the forbidden power made my stomach crawl. But standing there in the maji chamber, I had to wonder what all the fuss was about.

"Your spells sound like a kindergartner on the first day of school," Dakari raged at me, "When you try to conjure a weapon you get a triple scoop of ice cream???" "I swear I am trying, my magic seems to have a few glitches," I look at him sheepishly, "I will keep trying." I don't mention that I had been just daydreaming about running out for a frozen treat later. "And Maggie," he says whirling on her. "What is the hell is that?" We all stand looking at the puddle of yellowish muck in the middle of the floor.

Freya’s P.O.V “My coven just used me to get to you,” Maggie’s voice sounded lifeless. “They told me they’ll extract your magic and give it to me, to make me powerful…but now my great-grandmother told me that I helped them for the greater good. That it was my duty to those who had brought me up…fed me and nourished me till I turned eighteen…and that was it…” I didn’t like the way it sounded. Maggie’s great-grandmother sounded like a dick, but that wasn’t my concern. I didn’t like the way Maggie’s eyes looked so dead…as if she was exhausted inside.
