Chapter Two Mia held her stomach as though it was her life as she tried to understand the situation she was in. She couldn't even dare think she was pregnant. But she was! She thought back to when the rape happened and it was then it dawned on her that she hadn't taken any contraceptives to prevent this. But how could she have? The whole world was against her thereby preventing her from thinking straight. She didn't think she was willing to accept this child though. "I'm going to have an abortion!"

The mere idea killed me. I always waited for my mate. Never even thought about another male, never gave anyone else a single glance. But what did I get in return? Nothing. Absolutely nothing. I walked back to my car through the parking garage alone, my heels quiet on the concrete, the folder gone and the plan in motion and the thing in my chest that had been cold and still for weeks beginning, very faintly, to warm. I put my hand against my stomach for a moment. Just for a moment. "First wall," I told the quiet. "We built the first wall tonight." Then I got in the car and drove back through the dark city toward a penthouse I lived in and did not belong to, past the river that ran between everything, and I let myself feel, for exactly as long as the drive allowed, the terrifying, necessary, fragile thing that was beginning to grow. Not just the baby. The empire. Both of them, quie
