The civilians screamed. Some ran. Some stayed frozen. "Get them out!" I shouted through the bond to Caspian.

Silas whispered, his gold-and-sapphire skin glowing with a frantic brilliance. He looked at the sea of mercury and saw thousands of "Fragments"—small, glowing shards of souls that had been discarded. And in the center of the sea, the Merchant-Beast stood like a titan of "Biological Chaos." It wasn't a man in a suit anymore. It was a massive, shifting mass of "Rejected Scents" and "Dirty Data," its head a solid, glowing violet "Barcode." In its claws, it held a small, white-glass cage.

The gargoyle roared—a sound like a landslide—and swiped at Jack. Jack ducked under the claw, moving with a speed that felt alien to him. He could see the stress points in the obsidian. He could see the magic holding the atoms together. He slammed his Entropy Hand onto the creature's leg. There was no sound of impact. Just a sickening shlurp noise as the Entropy ate the magic. The obsidian leg didn't shatter. It rotted. In a second, the hard volcanic glass turned into soft, grey ash. The creature toppled sideways, screeching in a frequency that shattered the water pitchers on the table.

It’s scales took on the color of honey, shining like mirrors in the sun, and it landed with the grace of a blue heron, as it’s onyx talons clacked against the concrete patio.
