Ang nobelang ito ay pagbalik-tanaw sa taong 1884 kung saan ang Pilipinas ay nasa pamumuno pa ng kahariang Espanya. Ang kuwentong ito ay tungkol sa isang Italyano-Pilipinong mestisa na gustong ibaon sa limot ang pagiging isang bampira at ninais mamuhay ulit ng karaniwan bilang isang tao.
