The soldier shouted, “Traitor! Stop!”
Ryan hit him again, elbow to jaw, sending the rifle spinning across the barn floor. Amelia scrambled toward it instinctively, her hands shaking, but before she reached it
The gun fired.
The blast echoed like thunder.
Amelia screamed.
She didn’t know who had been hit Ryan? The soldier? Herself? For a terrible, breathless moment, she felt nothing but white-hot terror and ringing silence.
Then she heard Ryan grunt a sound torn from his chest as he wrestled the soldier to the ground. The two men rolled through hay and dirt, fists slamming against ribs, faces, anything they could reach. The soldier was stronger, heavier, and fueled by rage.
