The night before the fundraiser, Skye couldn’t sleep. She wandered the house barefoot, the tin of letters in her hands. At the kitchen table, she read them one by one. Each note was a breadcrumb. Each voice a spark. At sunrise, she climbed to the attic and sat by the dormer window. Marla joined her with a blanket, curling up beside her like a cat. “Can’t sleep either?” Skye asked.
