“Really? I envy you. This uniform I’m wearing used to be my sister’s. As you can see, it doesn’t quite fit.”
“Are you taller than your older sister?” Kate asked incredulously.
“Yeah, I am. But only by a couple of inches. My sis is tall too. We all take after our father.”
Kate fell quiet because Francine said “father” instead of “pa” or “dad”. In the Philippines, kids never called their parents by their first names (unlike in the US) and usually, only rich kids used “pa” or “dad”. Kate wasn’t exactly a rich kid, as she was only now discovering, but she still grew up calling her parents “pa” and “ma”.
