Then the feral state crashed back down over him like a wave, and the moment was lost. He roared again—a sound of rage and confusion—and turned back toward Lysander, but his movements were different now. Less coordinated. More erratic. He was fighting himself, fighting the beast, fighting the part of him that wanted to keep killing. "No!" Lysander shouted. He raised his hand, and dark magic began to crackle around his fingers. "Compulsion. Bind him. Make him attack the guards!" The magic hit Kael hard, and his roar became something else entirely—a sound of agony and defiance mixed together.

Drago had a death grip on her arm, trying to calm her, but who could be calm at a time like this? The golden beast lumbered toward them, then stopped directly in front of Drago, letting out a low growl, steam puffing from it’s huge nostrils. When Drago growled in return, Madchen jumped, trying to free herself from Drago’s grip, but he wasn’t letting her go.

Each one looks confident and even pleased when they receive their beast. Suddenly, Krystal snorts in an amused way, and I look at her.

I grab her hand like she has done for us numerous times, and she shoots me a thankful grin. When the male Kea finishes assigning the champions to the beasts, they are fighting they leave the field.
