He looks like gold. “I bet we can do it,” I say with a smile. “Together.” Even though he didn’t win, Finn brushes a kiss over my lips. “Together.”

And God, I want him to pay attention to me. Finn Santos. My father told me his friend from college would be staying with us for the week leading up to his wedding, and that Finn would be the photographer. This man is hardly the stereotypical artsy type, however. With his thick beard, swirls of ink covering his sculpted arms, and the slightest hint of gray at his temples, Finn is the definition of rugged. He’s unyielding. Severe. Something about that makes me want to see how far I can push him. What’s his breaking point? What will he do when he snaps?

“You’re barely more than a pup. Shouldn’t you be back at the main house with the others?” Finn’s face heated. He sat up straighter, trying to look tougher. “I’m old enough to stand watch. And I’m not little.” Soren’s chuckle turned into a soft laugh. He took another step closer, close enough that Finn could smell him—night-blooming jasmine and old blood, a scent that should have been repulsive but somehow wasn’t. “Seventeen, aren’t you? I can smell it on you. Young. Eager. Still learning what your body wants.”

Then a car pulled up beside the van. Zayn’s jaw tightened. Finn stepped out, not in a suit, but in casual pants and a sweater, looking effortlessly at home. He watched as Axel sprinted to meet Finn. Finn’s face lit up with a genuine, easy joy Zayn had never seen on him before. He bent down, caught Axel mid-run, lifted him high, spun him once, and settled him against his chest. Axel wrapped his arms around Finn’s neck and began chattering instantly.
