Penelope stood in the opening with fire behind her like some avenging goddess stepped out of hell itself. Her eyes locked onto mine. “Kelsey, get back here!” I ran faster. Nick had already disappeared into the darkness ahead but I could hear his footsteps crashing through underbrush. Penelope’s footsteps came after me. Closer. Getting closer. My heel caught on a root and I went down hard. Dirt filled my mouth. Before I could push myself up, hands grabbed my shoulders and flipped me onto my back. Penelope’s face was soot-black. Burns marked her arms where fire had caught her clothes, but her eyes blazed hotter than any flame.

Like a man unhinged, he dashed forward and roared, "Let her go!" Scott froze for a split second—just long enough. Caleb lashed out with his long leg and struck the man's gun arm, shattering his grip. In the same motion, he wrenched the weapon free and dragged Sydney behind him, shielding her with his body. A shout pierced the chaos. "Fire!" Sydney twisted her head, her blood running cold. Flames leapt wildly, licking the floor and igniting barrels of gasoline. Penelope and her son were gone. "Who the hell set the fire?!" Scott swore, panic flashing across his face. He knew Caleb would never forgive him if this went wrong.

“Definitely more urgent that figuring out what the deal with me and Kade was.” “Right. Fires are very big deals. And Kade was a jerk earlier.” “He was totally a jerk. Not worth our time to worry about. And if fires aren’t dealt with quickly, they can spin out of control very fast.” “Right.” “Penelope, did the guard say that there WAS a fire at Ingrid’s house or that there IS a fire a Ingrid’s house?” Penelope thought for a moment. “I don’t remember.”

She rolled up the window and drove into the estate gates, which opened automatically as if welcoming her in.

I welcome the heat of the fire in my skin. After chasing a ghost, this is a welcome feeling. I catch Chris's eyes from afar. He's with the other guys doing the final adjustments. When he sees me, he whispers something to his partner. The guy looks at me and nods smiling. Chris trots over to me.
