Shama reached out to touch it, but it fluttered away, leaving behind a trail of shimmering sparks. Shama rose to her feet and chased after the firefly. As she stepped on the long grasses, a swarm of fireflies rose from the ground, like a magical cloud of light. Shama giggled with delight and ran through the field, twirling and dancing among the fireflies. She felt like a child again, filled with wonder and joy. Unbeknownst to her, someone watched her from the shadows, their heart pounding with a strange emotion. Shama, under the moonlight, amidst a thousand fireflies, appeared ethereal. Her laughter echoed through the night air, like music to the observer's ears.

Those words, "I like you too," came to the tip of her mouth as butterflies flew inside her stomach with their proximity but never came out. When their sparkly ends met, there a shower of snow-sized fire drifted in the air. From where she stood, it resembled the nature of fireflies all too well. If she didn’t know better, she’d have tried and catch one. But she knew, even without attempting so, that it would fry her alive. It was rather ironic how it didn’t make the surrounding air so hot despite it looking so terribly enraged. But perhaps, it was because she didn’t fear, so the trick of this place could not dare to touch her.

Leila admired the flask that sat nicely on the windowsill as if she was holding an intimate part of Thorn. Somehow she felt drowsy again, and her eyelids fluttered heavily like a pair of lead wings. Sla...tha..r....sla..thar... The calling came back again, luring her to the edge of sleep. Her surroundings became a sparkling blur like the world inside a mirror. The second voice sharpened. "There's something nearby." "You're imagining it." "No. Listen. Past the water. Small heart. Scared." I stopped breathing. "Goddammit, Hart. We leave. Now." "We're not doing anything wrong. Just a stroll under the pretty moonlight." A pause, long and deliberate, long enough to rewrite everything I thought I knew about the shape of the world. "Hunting little children." The whistle cut through the dark. High and sharp, from somewhere across the clearing.

The suns setting outside, the darkness of the cave evidence of that but to my surprise little specs of light start to fly around. I don’t think I’ve ever been here so late in the day and I’m sure I’ve never seen the beauty of fireflies lighting up the cage. I have to blink a few times and prevent myself from asking if Theo did this. Can you catch fireflies and bring them through water? Surely not, but somehow these beautiful creatures have inhabited themself inside here, lighting up the spaces dully. “They’re beautiful,” I murmur because I need to say something. “As are you, beautiful.”
