Lia blinked at the sight. “A lake?” she asked, stepping out. “Yes,” Damien said, joining her. “Whenever I need to breathe, I come here. Take a swim. Just me and the sound of the birds. Come on, you’ll love it.” He took her hand gently, leading her to the water’s edge. The lake was calm and glassy, reflecting the orange-pink sky. Without hesitation, Damien peeled off his shirt and jumped into the water with a splash. “Come on in! It’s perfect!”

I took off for the wild yonder, gazing up at the Milky Way sprawled across the night sky. It was my son's dream. He was a stargazer, an astronomy buff since he was knee-high. On his birthday, he saw his first meteor shower in the wild. Tragically, that same night became his last. I was determined to make his dream come true. The divorce papers, signed by Elias, landed in my mailbox. Maybe it was guilt, but he rewrote the terms, leaving me with a lion's share of our assets. I took it all without batting an eye.

I flip onto my back and just float. The water holds me up, and I stare at the sky. It's that impossibly clear, perfect blue, the kind that makes your chest feel light. A few lazy white clouds drift by, like cotton candy someone spun and let go. The birds in the trees sound like they’re having a party, and the sun - Goddes, the sun is warm on my skin. It feels like a promise.

I shuddered and tried not to pay attention but I could hear them smacking and crunching away, and it made my stomach churn. We felt the boat rocking a bit more and suddenly a coffin came to the surface along with all the divers. Angel immediately levitated it on the boat and water gushed out from it. Sunny dramatically threw herself on top of it like she was a widow at a funeral. Dad and Hunter picked her up and held her back.
