As Phoenix tried to close the distance between us, I maintained my water buffer.
"I've heard your mom call you Robbi," he noted. "But I prefer Robyn. It's pretty."
"Yeah, well, that makes two of us." I hated when Mom used Dad's pet name for me—it never sounded right from anyone else. I eyed Phoenix, noticing that with his heavy muscular bulk, he had to work pretty hard to stay afloat. "Wanna race?"
He sized me up with a smirk. "That hardly seems fair." I knew what he was thinking—being taller, he assumed he could easily outswim me. But he had no idea what I was capable of.
