It was a pleasure to burn. Rave smiled as he watched the tiny blue flames dance from his fingertips—the outward manifestation of the magical inner fire coursing through his body. The heat shone dimly through the bronze skin of his face, making his long, dark copper-colored hair seem to shimmer in the shadows of the woods. The reason for the flames crouched behind a gnarled oak some fifty yards away—a vampire, stealthily watching humans at play in a grassy park below.

When I walked out of the doctor's office with my test results, the hospital's advertisement screen played the scene of Brandon proposing to me. Under a dazzling starry sky, deep blue fireworks lit up the night. He wore a white suit and kneeled in a rose garden, opening a box with a diamond ring inside. The scene was so beautiful that it looked like something straight out of a romance drama. I overheard some patients' family members chatting with a nurse. "I'm really so jealous of Ms. Pace. Meeting a man like Mr. Foster is the luck of eight lifetimes."

He could almost see me, my eyes crinkling into a smile, leaning in for a quick kiss. At a red light, he saw a young couple on the sidewalk. The guy was down on one knee, a bouquet of fiery roses in hand, awkwardly confessing his love. The girl nodded, and they embraced, cheering. For a moment, he was lost in the memory of us, of countless moments just like that. However, they were nothing but memories gathering dust. He did not slow down until he reached the villa. The dim light from inside the house somehow calmed his racing heart.

Third-person POV At that moment, Frank was sitting in his office, reviewing the investigation report his subordinates had sent him. The first report was a miscarriage report, which clearly stated that Darcy had suffered a miscarriage on the day of the fire. The cause of the miscarriage had also been determined through investigation and reviewing surveillance footage. Frank had shaken off Darcy's hand during the fire and hadn't heard her cries for help. The second report stated that Johanna had been deliberately spreading rumors to manipulate public opinion around this time.

“I’ve been watching you lately, you are always practicing.” She glanced at me sideways. “Yea, right.” Then she pulled her hand free and lifted her palm between us. Silver flame bloomed above her skin—soft, luminous, alive. It didn’t burn the air; it sang to it, flickering like moonlight given form. The fire danced obediently, reflecting in her eyes. Beautiful. Dangerous. Hers. She closed her fist, and the flames vanished as though they’d never been there. I smirked. “Show-off.”

NADIA MY RIVAL “What the fuck is your problem? Don’t you ever have anything better to do aside from always getting on my nerves, you little piece of shit?” Nadia screamed, voice sharp enough to cut through the post-game noise on the court. Her chest heaved, her skin glowing with sweat under the lights, full breasts straining against her sports bra as she glared pure fire at me. God, she’s stunning when she’s pissed. That fire only made me want her more.

I hold my arms to my sides and call to the flames. The flames seemingly turn in my direction, and I brace myself, preparing for the flames to hit me in the chest. The icy pain of the flames hits me in the chest. I close my eyes, trying to ignore the pain until the flames from the buildings begin to extinguish around me. I open my eyes and breathe in a sigh of relief. The fire is almost gone. I call out one last time for the flames to come to me, and they do. The remaining flames hit me in the chest with such force that it causes me to drop to my knees. I turn around, look at the fading figure, and offer her a smile.
