Telephone poles were ripped from the ground, their sparks setting fire to dumpsters. The blaze shot up, forming a fiery barrier that stopped the Haunts in their tracks. They howled, their earlier ferocity gone. Brave souls ventured from their homes, hurling cans of gasoline into the fire, fueling the inferno. A fiery explosion rocked the sky, sending the dark clouds above into an array. Mom gripped my burned brother's hand tightly. "We're leaving now," she declared. "We've got the cash to start fresh. Somewhere better."

All I hear is, "By the power vested upon me, you will become the queen of Evergreen, from today until forever!" A maid removes my crown and my father stands up. He walks next to the high priest. The priest takes a few steps back and my father takes the queen's crown. Gently, he crowns me with it and says, "I am so proud of you!" I force a smile and curtsy as father nods and goes back into his place. I face the crowd once and for all. The high priest announces, "Ladies and Gentlemen, Children, world-- help me welcome the new Queen of Evergreen, Aurora Wintershade!"

But as she approached, she could smell the rot emanating from beneath its jeweled surface, could see tiny insects crawling in and out of gaps between the gems. When she reached for it, the crown moved. Not lifted—it flew to her head of its own accord, slamming down with force that cracked her skull. Immediately, agony beyond description flooded through her as the crown began to melt, molten gold and superheated gems flowing down her face, over her eyes, into her mouth. She opened her throat to scream and liquid fire poured down, burning away her vocal cords, her lungs, everything inside her that made sound possible.
